EL SALVADOR

    El Salvador is a country in Central America.It is the smallest and most densely populated of the seven Central American countries. It is bordered on the northeast by Honduras, on the northwest by Guatemala, and on the south by the Pacific Ocean. El Salvador's capital and largest city is San Salvador. It traditionally was an agricultural country, until it rapidly expanded in the 1960s and 70s. The country could not be self-sufficient and must import food. It's population in 2021 was roughly 6.314 million. The land has a total area of 21,040 km2 and a total coastline of 307km, this is approximately 84% of Maryland. It is the 27th biggest country in the Americas.


    El Salvador has had many hazards, disasters and catastrophes happen. From earthquakes, floods, landslides to hurricanes. An earthquake occurred in August 26th, 2012; measuring 7.3 magnitude. No deaths were reported but more than 40 people were injured when they caught in a tsunami generated by the earthquake.

    In November 6 to November 9 in 2009, El Salvador experienced heavy rain that caused mud/rock slides and floods. This killed and estimated amount of 130 people and left approximately 66 missing.

A Natural Disaster is a natural occurring weather event that can impact a large geographical area. For example, hurricanes or earthquakes. A Natural Hazard is a natural phenomenon that can cause negative affect on the environment, humans or animals. For example, tornadoes and flash-floods. A Natural Catastrophe is an unexpected event caused by nature. For example, tsunamis, wildfires or landslides.
