 Volcanic Activity



El Salvador is called The Land of Volcanoes. There are 170 volcanoes scattered in a territory of 21,041 square kilometers. El Salvador is a small nation but very volcanically active, in fact 90% of it's area had volcanic materials
The Volcanoes in El Salvador have always been important to the country and have been a part of the cultural history of the country since precolonial times. 






El Salvador has 20  Holocene volcanoes. Holocene volcanoes are volcanoes that have been active in the last 11,700 years. They fall into two broad categories: dormant and active. Dormant volcanoes are no very likely to erupt soon as compared to active volcanoes that have a higher chance of eruption in the near future.
It has 23 active volcanoes which six of those are frequently monitored for seismic activity. Santa Ana, Izalco, San Salvador, San Vicente, Chaparrastique and the Llopango Caldera.

  1. I had no idea El Salvador had so much volcano activity, with several of their volcanoes still being active. I think it is cool that they have incorporated volcanoes as part of their cultural history. Thank you for your informative post.
